Blending strategic thinking
with striking design.
Aim
Rethread was created using 100% second-hand denim. The collection aims to challenge the low worth of discarded denim by transforming it into artisanal garments of dysfunctional beauty.
Inspired by the fashion industry’s environmental pollution in the documentary ‘River Blue’, Rethread was born out of a desire to encourage the reuse of existing materials. Denim became the focus of the collection due to its widespread popularity and high environmental cost. On any given day it is estimated that over half the world’s population is wearing Denim. Yet, it is one of the most resource-intensive textiles with thousands of litres of water, hazardous chemicals and excessive energy required to produce a pair of jeans. Denim is a great place to begin a process of change because it speaks a language everybody understands, and it is time to talk.
To limit off-cut waste I developed textile processes such as ‘denim fur’ and ‘denim mesh’ as well as using patchworking to ensure I utilised every last scrap. ‘Denim fur’ is a fur alternative textile created from small denim off-cuts. It is created through a process of cutting, wire brushing, washing, and layering frayed strips of denim. While denim mesh is created through strategically slashing and fraying denim so that it becomes delicate and drape-able. Through this process, everyday garments such as a pair of jeans can be transformed into an artisanal dress with only a waistband and fly as off-cuts.
The result is a collection that contrasts delicate chaos and clean durability. Chaos taking the form of rips, falling yarns and frayed denim fur sewn into jean silhouettes. Balanced with a more couture approach with unblemished denim featuring clean panels with traditional denim top-stitching. Ultimately, creating one-off artisanal pieces that could never be remade identically. Encouraging consumers to think twice before making a new purchase, because pre-loved garments can have even more character and beauty.
